Really cool spot. What we didn't know is, there isn't any specific "path" to follow. Just park in the parking lot and we worked our way to the right (facing the lake) until we found a good spot to stop and swim.Lots of dead fish carcasses, likely due to them getting stuck in shallow "ponds" when they get washed into them or swim in when water levels are up.Water was amazing, crystal clear and warm, but refreshing (mid July).Moderate hiking to get back up, but not too difficult.
Great place to explore. As others have said, there is no trail, you just traverse the rocky terrain. I took a swim, but be very CAREFUL wherever you decide to go in, as the wet rocks at the water are VERY slippery with wet feet. If you don't plan for it, you may struggle to get back out. Plan your entry/exit very carefully, or wear water shoes, or at a very minimum keep your regular shoes within reach of the water. But yeah, very cool area. I was here early on a Wednesday morning and had the place completely to myself right until I was about to leave.
A really really cool spot for a hike and a swim! And of course some good photo shooting possibilities. It’s accessible to everyone, no fees, no entry tickets, parking available. I do recommend comfortable shoes especially if you’re planning to go down to the beach. No flip flops.

The views are absolutely stunning, and it's one of the most unique hikes we've done!🚗 Easy to access – Just drive up and park at the very end (follow Google Maps); you’ll be greeted with incredible scenery right from the start and there are a few spots along the drive to park and take pictures. You don’t have to hike down unless you want to, making it great for all skill levels.🐾 Pet-friendly – A great spot to bring your furry friends! Just remember to keep it clean—please pick up after your pets and don’t leave any trash behind.⚠️ A few things to note – Watch your step, as there are some areas with broken glass. Take your time exploring, and wear sturdy shoes for the rocky terrain. Also, bring water, you will need it.Overall, Chains Trail is an underrated gem with jaw-dropping views, peaceful surroundings, and a perfect spot for adventure lovers. Highly recommend checking it out! 🌅🔥
Easy to drive too with lots of parking and restrooms. Free hiking throughout. If you have good hiking shoes/boots, you can hike close to the edge of Lake Powell on the right side from the parking lot. I did that today and it was very secluded. It was nice to lay out on the rocks with the views of the lake. I didn't want to leave!

The Chains is a beloved local day‑use spot on the south shore of Lake Powell, inside Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. A short drive down Chains Road ends at a parking area where visitors descend smooth Navajo sandstone to the water’s edge. With no designated trail, you’re free to explore sculpted rock ledges, cast a fishing line, or plunge into the cool, 400‑foot‑deep lake. There are no lifeguards, shade, or concessions, so come prepared with water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear. Vault toilets and trash receptacles are provided, but everything else is strictly BYO—help keep the shoreline pristine by packing out what you pack in.
