The go-to parking lot for viewing the south rim. If you arrive before 7AM it will be completely empty and you’ll get a view of the sunrise! Alternatively, if you want to star gaze and leave your car in a semi-lit place this is also the spot! Close enough to the rim that you can get there at night.Park your car here and leave it for the whole day. You can star your journey here and walk to all the other lookouts and take the bus back!
The Grand canyon is an amazing place to see. Be prepared to spend the day there at least.

Got there just before 9am on a Thursday, no problem with finding a spot, but it is also not high travel season.

Parking Lot 1 is the primary and largest of four lots at the South Rim Visitor Center Plaza. Clearly signed and paved, it accommodates standard vehicles plus oversized RVs and trailers—something the other three lots cannot. Visitors can leave their car here all day, explore the canyon rim on foot or board free shuttle buses without the stress of village traffic. The lot remains open 24/7, though spaces often fill by late morning in peak season. Accessible bays, level walkways and proximity to restrooms, water‑filling stations and the Bright Angel Bicycles Café make it the most convenient base for a South Rim visit.
From the South Entrance Station, drive 5 mi/8 km north on South Entrance Rd; follow signs for ‘Visitor Center Parking’. Orange & Blue Routes stop at Visitor Center Plaza (short walk from Lot 1). Rim Trail and shared‑use paths connect the lot to Mather Point, Market Plaza and Grand Canyon Village.
