Opened in the 1960s and named for first NPS director Stephen T. Mather, the campground contains 327 reservable sites plus a small horse camp. Sites accommodate tents or RVs up to 30 ft (no hookups). Reservations are required March 1 – Nov 30 and can be made up to six months in advance on Recreation.gov. December–February operates first‑come, first‑served, giving winter visitors a quiet, snowy experience on the South Rim.
