Highway 89 Dinosaur Tracks

Experience authentic 200-million-year-old dinosaur footprints at this fascinating outdoor display, featuring real fossilized tracks from a massive carnivorous dinosaur alongside the engineering marvel of Glen Canyon Dam.

The Dinosaur Tracks display at Carl Hayden Visitor Center offers visitors an extraordinary glimpse into the Jurassic Period, when massive theropod dinosaurs roamed the landscape that would eventually become the Colorado Plateau. This remarkable outdoor exhibit features a genuine slab of sandstone containing seven perfectly preserved three-toed tracks, each telling the story of a powerful predator that walked this land approximately 200 million years ago. The tracks, believed to have been made by a one-ton, twenty-foot-long carnivorous dinosaur, were discovered in a nearby side canyon and carefully relocated to this accessible location where visitors can observe and even touch these incredible remnants of prehistoric life. The display serves as a testament to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area’s rich paleontological heritage, which includes some of the most complete sections of Mesozoic Era geological strata in North America.
