A small mostly modern cemetery. Not very well kept, but beautiful just the same. A really quick walk from the "Trail of Time" that meets the South Rim Trail. A wonderful monument in remembrance of the plane crash in 1956.It's a small quiet walk around the cemetery. There are no paved paths that I could see and no worn paths as well. So please walk respectfully and watch your step.Cemetery did not appear well maintained, but a beautiful place just the same🙏
This is more than a tourist attraction, this is my sister’s last resting place.If you choose to go here please do so with that in mind. It is more than history. There are some of us alive still whose loved ones rest there.

Grand Canyon Pioneer Cemetery—also known as South Rim Cemetery or American Legion Cemetery—is the final resting place for many of the canyon’s earliest guides, builders, scientists, artists, and park employees. Established in 1919 with the burial of famed guide John Hance, the small, pine‑shaded graveyard now holds roughly 400 graves and memorials, including a cenotaph honoring victims of the 1956 mid‑air collision over the canyon. Managed by the National Park Service, the cemetery remains open for visitation and offers a quiet, reflective glimpse into the human history of Grand Canyon.
By Car – From the South Entrance Station, follow South Entrance Rd. 5 mi (8 km) to Grand Canyon Village. Turn right on Center Rd.; Parking Lot A and the cemetery entrance will be on your left, just west of the Shrine of the Ages. By Park Shuttle – Board the Village (Blue) Route and exit at the Shrine of the Ages stop. The cemetery gate is a 1‑minute walk west along Center Rd. On Foot/Bike – The cemetery lies 0.4 mi (0.6 km) south of the Rim Trail near the Bright Angel Trailhead; paved paths connect all village facilities.
Only individuals who lived at Grand Canyon for at least three consecutive years or made a significant contribution to the park may be interred, subject to approval by the Park Superintendent.
No. Access is covered by your Grand Canyon National Park entrance fee; there is no separate cemetery charge.
The site is ungated and generally accessible from dawn to dusk. Visiting after dark is discouraged for safety.
Yes, the main path is level gravel. Some assistance may be required on uneven sections.
Ranger‑led history walks occasionally stop at the cemetery in summer. Check the daily Park Ranger Program Schedule at visitor centers.
Leashed pets are allowed, but owners must remain on paths and clean up after their animals.
Use Parking Lot A directly next to the cemetery entrance on Center Road.
Public restrooms and a water‑bottle filling station are inside the Shrine of the Ages, about 100 yards east of the cemetery gate.
