Why Visit Colter Hall
Colter Hall is a 75‑room women’s dormitory built in 1937 to house employees of the Fred Harvey Company—today operated by Xanterra—on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Designed by renowned architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, the three‑story stone and wood structure blends into the historic village core just east of El Tovar Hotel.
Description
Although the building is not open to park visitors, its exterior is easily viewed from Village Loop Drive. Colter Hall remains an active residence for seasonal and permanent staff, making it an important yet often overlooked part of the Grand Canyon’s living history.
History
1936
A 53‑room men’s dormitory (later named Victor Hall) is completed to meet rising employee housing demand.
1937
The 75‑room women’s dormitory—later named Colter Hall—opens, clad in local stone with wood siding on the upper story.
1946
Safety upgrades are ordered after a routine inspection highlights the need for better fire‑escape access.
1970s–Present
Building continues to serve as all‑female housing for concessioner staff; interior modernized while exterior remains historically intact.

Colter Hall sits on the north side of Village Loop Drive, roughly 400 ft (120 m) east of El Tovar Hotel and 0.3 mi (0.5 km) west of Bright Angel Lodge. From the Grand Canyon Visitor Center (South Rim): Follow South Entrance Road west for 5 mi (8 km) to Market Plaza. Continue onto Village Loop Drive. Pass El Tovar Hotel; Colter Hall is the next large stone building on the left.
