A good stop along the Rim Trail, I checked out Buckey’s Cabin. Buckey O’Neill went west at age 19 and landed here, managing a small hotel with his wife, after being everything from a lawyer, sheriff, and mayor to a gambler, miner, and adventurer. He was even one of Roosevelt’s “Rough Riders” during the Spanish American War, dying in 1898, just three years after the cabin was built. It stands here as the last of the pioneer settlement era structures.
Located along the south rim of the Grand Canyon and adjacent to the Rim Trail. The cabin you see here is the last of the remaining settlement that was built here circa 1895. In 1897, the cabin was next to the Bright Angel Hotel. There is an informational panel in front of the cabin with additional background information.
This is a historic cabin, right on the edge of the south rim. It’s adjacent to the bright angel lodge. I believe it’s the oldest structure in the area built by an early pioneer to the Grand Canyon. Just walk by and marvel. Recommend.
