Description

Antelope Pass crowns the steepest grade on US‑89, climbing the Echo Cliffs before dropping toward Page. A Navajo‑maintained pull‑out lets travelers safely absorb an immense landscape: Navajo Mountain to the east, Vermilion Cliffs to the west and the trench of Marble Canyon straight ahead. Sitting on Navajo Nation land just outside Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the site requires no federal pass or fee. Amenities are minimal—only an interpretive panel—so bring water, secure loose hats and expect strong winds and intense midday sun. Its proximity to Page (20 min) makes it a convenient stop en route to Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon or the North Rim.

History

1956 – US‑89 completed over Antelope Pass, replacing an earlier Navajo wagon route.
1963 – Glen Canyon Dam closes; newly formed Lake Powell becomes visible from the pass.
Feb 2013 – Landslide south of the pass severs US‑89; traffic detoured for two years.
Mar 2015 – ADOT reopens the rebuilt roadway with reinforced slopes near Antelope Pass.
2024 – New interpretive sign installed highlighting Navajo history of the Echo Cliffs.
