Elling Halvorson came to this area in 1963 with the challenge to construct the pipeline from Roaring Springs to the Grand Canyon Village. This incredible task was complicated by the 100 year flood of 1966. A life changing moment for Big E, their family has provided community leadership and a commitment to creating the highest quality tourism experiences at the Grand Canyon. Elling and his wife, Barbara, fell in love with the canyon. This commitment to the canyon is evidenced by the Best Western Grand Canyon Squire Inn, Papillon Helicopters, Grand Canyon Helicopters, Grand Canyon Airlines, and now the Big E Steakhouse & Saloon in downtown Tusayan.
