Slightly – Hoover Dam is about 30 minutes outside of Las Vegas. That 4-5 hour figure you’ve seen refers to Grand Canyon South Rim, the National Park which is a totally separate area from Grand Canyon West.

The South Rim is considered to be the “heart” of the Grand Canyon. The best views of the canyon you seen pictures of over time, plus more visitor services are available there.

Can I get views of West rim for free, without taking any tours.

No, it requires paying an Entrance Fee to the Hualapai Tribe.
This is why all the Tours are a Package upon arrival at Grand Canyon West…they include the Entrance Fee to the Hualapai Nation.

You can drive yourself or take any of the Tours offered from Vegas via Bus, Airplane, and Helicopter!
