Part of the Navajo Indian Reservation, Monument Valley is comprised of buttes, mesas, spires, pinnacles and arches, separated by vast stretches of untouched desert. The valley’s formations, such as “the Mittens,” “the Stagecoach,” “Elephant Butte,” and “The Three Sisters,” are the result of an “upwarp” in the Colorado Plateau, whose mass was subsequently carved into pieces by meandering rivers and relentless winds.
Most visitors to Monument Valley view these formations via a 17-mile dirt road, built in 1939 by Hollywood film director John Ford, who brought Monument Valley to a worldwide audience with the release of the film “Stagecoach.” You can see it from a much grander and more comfortable perspective - soaring with the eagles as you listen to automated tour narration available in English and other international languages.
